What Makes Washed Linen Rayon Fabric So Special? (And How to Sew with It)

Posted by Gala Textile on

If you've been searching for a fabric that feels as good as it looks, washed linen rayon might be exactly what your sewing room needs. Our Washed Linen Rayon Fabric is a 70% Rayon / 30% Linen blend, garment-washed for that effortlessly soft, lived-in feel right off the bolt. We handle a lot of fabric — this one genuinely stands out.

What is washed linen rayon?

It's a blended fabric that brings together the breathability and texture of linen with the softness and drape of rayon. The garment-washing process pre-shrinks the fabric, relaxes the fibers, and gives it a beautiful matte finish that only gets better with every wash. Unlike stiff raw linen, this feels gentle against skin from day one.

Ours is 210 GSM — substantial enough for structured pieces, fluid enough to drape beautifully. At 51 inches wide, you get generous yardage for wide pattern pieces like palazzo pants and maxi skirts.

Why sewists love it

The washing process does something almost magical to linen blends. The fibers relax into a soft, slightly crinkled texture that looks effortlessly chic — no ironing required for that intentionally casual aesthetic. It breathes beautifully in warm weather, layers well when it cools down, and the rayon content adds a gentle fluidity that pure linen just doesn't have. Your finished garment moves with you instead of standing stiff.

What to make with washed linen rayon

Flowy summer dresses, midi skirts, wide-leg trousers, relaxed jumpsuits, oversized blouses, lightweight blazers — this fabric handles all of it beautifully. It's also wonderful for home projects: tote bags, lightweight curtains, pillow covers, and table runners all take on a relaxed, organic quality in washed linen rayon that's hard to achieve with other fabrics.

Quick sewing tips

Use a sharp needle, size 80/12 or 90/14 — it pierces the weave cleanly without snagging. Standard straight stitch at 2.5mm works well; finish seam allowances with a serger or zigzag to prevent fraying. Press with a medium-hot iron on the linen setting — steam is your friend here. We recommend pre-washing before cutting. French seams or flat-felled seams give a really clean, professional finish at this weight.

18 colors

We carry this washed linen rayon fabric by the yard in 18 curated colors — warm neutrals like Natural Linen, Khaki, and Ivory, and expressive shades like Rosebloom Pink, Province Blue, Moss Green, and Rubby Red. Multiple yards are cut in one continuous piece.
